UFT differentials

UFT salary differentials explained

Step pays you for time served. A differential pays you for what you have qualified for, and it compounds through every contractual increase that follows it.

How a differential changes your pay

Think of the UFT schedule as a grid. Step is the row you move down as each year of service completes. Differential is the column, and it changes when you document additional graduate credits, a master’s degree or a doctorate through the salary differential application process.

The important consequence is compounding. Contractual increases are applied as a percentage of base salary, so a differential granted today raises the starting point for every increase that follows. A differential taken early in a career is worth materially more than the same differential taken late.

For how the schedule as a whole is structured, see the UFT salary schedule page, and for pension and benefits context, the DOE teacher salary guide.

What a differential is worth after tax

The two published starting points give a clean read on the after-tax value of moving up a differential at the start of a career.

PositionBase salaryNet / checkAnnual netEffective rate
Bachelor's, no prior experience$68,902$1,997.81$51,94324.6%
Master's, no prior experience$77,455$2,198.72$57,16726.2%

The $8,553 difference in base salary adds $5,224 a year to take-home pay for a single NYC resident with no pre-tax deductions, so about 61% of the difference is kept. Add a TRS contribution or a 401(k) equivalent and the share you keep in cash falls further, while the amount reducing your taxable income rises.

Modelling your own differential

Once the differential is granted, enter your new base salary in the NTC paycheck calculator and add your TRS contribution as a pre-tax deduction. That gives you the realistic per-check figure rather than the gross schedule number.

Differential questions

What is a salary differential in the UFT contract?+

A differential is the column of the salary schedule that reflects your qualifications rather than your years of service. It moves you sideways to a higher row of base pay while your step continues to advance with time served.

Do graduate credits count, or only a full master's degree?+

The schedule recognises progression rather than only completed degrees. Additional approved graduate credits move a teacher across to a higher differential before a master's is finished, which is why the differential column has more positions than there are degree types. Your school's salary differential application confirms exactly where your credits place you and how they must be documented.

Is the differential permanent?+

It is permanent once awarded and verified, and it carries forward through every subsequent contractual increase, because those increases are applied as a percentage of your base. That compounding is what makes a differential worth more over a career than its face value at the time it is granted.

How much of a differential do you keep after tax?+

For a single NYC resident, roughly 74% of an increase in base pay reaches take-home pay at the levels shown here, with the rest going to federal, New York State, New York City and FICA tax. The higher your total income, the lower that percentage becomes, because all three income tax systems are progressive.

Does the differential change my pension?+

It can. TRS benefits are built on a final average salary, so a higher base salary across your final years of service feeds into the pension calculation as well as into current pay. That is the second reason a differential is usually worth pursuing early rather than late in a career.
