Estimated take-home bonus
$6,075.65
on a $10,000 bonus · 39.2% goes to tax
| Tax on the bonus | Amount |
|---|---|
| Federal income tax | $2,200.00 |
| New York State | $571.75 |
| New York City | $387.60 |
| FICA (Social Security + Medicare) | $765.00 |
| Total tax on the bonus | $3,924.35 |
This models the bonus as an extra dollar of annual income taxed at your marginal rate. Employers often withhold at a flat 22% supplemental rate instead, which is why a bonus check can look over-taxed until you file.
The 22% withholding rule, and why it misleads people
When a bonus is paid separately from regular wages, employers commonly withhold federal tax at a flat 22% supplemental wage rate. New York State and New York City apply their own withholding tables, and FICA applies to the full amount until the Social Security wage base is reached.
The result is a bonus check where the withheld percentage rarely matches the percentage actually owed. Around $100,000 of total income a single NYC resident is already in the 24% federal bracket and the 5.4% New York State bracket, so 22% federal withholding under-covers. At lower incomes the reverse happens and the withholding over-covers.
How much of a bonus you keep, by income
These are the effective rates on an extra $5,000 of income for a single NYC resident, which is the right way to think about a bonus. The rate climbs because every one of the three income tax systems is progressive.
| Base salary | Total tax on $5,000 | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | $1,443.45 | $3,556.55 |
| $75,000 | $1,946.30 | $3,053.70 |
| $100,000 | $1,971.30 | $3,028.70 |
| $150,000 | $2,071.30 | $2,928.70 |
| $250,000 | $2,253.80 | $2,746.20 |

Bonus tax questions
Why is my bonus taxed so much more than my salary?+−
It usually is not taxed more. Employers often withhold tax on bonuses and other supplemental wages at a flat 22% federal rate rather than at your marginal rate. If your marginal rate is higher than 22%, too little is withheld during the year and you settle up at filing. If it is lower, too much is withheld and you get it back.
Does New York City tax a bonus?+−
Yes, if you are an NYC resident. A bonus is wages, so it faces the same four layers as salary: federal income tax, New York State tax, New York City resident tax and FICA. There is no separate bonus rate at the state or city level.
Are bonuses subject to Social Security and Medicare?+−
Yes. Bonuses are FICA wages. Social Security tax applies until your year-to-date wages pass the $184,500 wage base for 2026, and Medicare applies with no cap, plus Additional Medicare Tax above $200,000 for a single filer.
Can I reduce tax on a bonus?+−
The two levers that work are increasing pre-tax contributions such as a 401(k) or HSA in the same year, and timing. Because the marginal rate rises with income, a bonus paid in a year when your other income is lower is taxed at a lower marginal rate than the same bonus in a high-income year.
How is this estimate calculated?+−
The calculator computes your total tax with and without the bonus and treats the difference as the tax on the bonus. That is the marginal cost of the extra income, which is the accurate figure, and it is why the percentage here can differ from the rate on your pay stub.
